The Northern Expedition - Encounter on the High Seas

After hurried preparations, the massive expedition fleet leaves Safeton for the North. The party are travelling with the patriarch on the his ship The Cleansing Light. The trip proves to be uneventful until very near to their first object ships are seen off in the distance.

As the ship get closer, the lookout shouts down from the crows nest, "Northerner!"

The trumpets sound and the sailor and soldiers move to their battle stations.

Despite the size of the expedition's fleet the northerners are not deterred and rapidly close with the fleet.

The fleet begins to engage the northern ships with ballistae and catapults. Flaming arrows and burning pitch arc towards the northern ships.

The first two ships from the Cleansing Light are direct hits on one of the northern ships. It bursts into flames and its remains quickly sink from view.

However, the northerners press on and soon they are within boarding range of several of the fleets ships. A particularly aggressive ship makes for The Cleansing Light and with a loud crash the ships lock together. Several of The Cleansing Light's crew are thrown to the deck by the impact.

The northerners attempts to swarm up the side of the ship, but the party and patriarch's guards are there to meet them. A melee ensues in which no quarter is asked and none is given. Kallista succeeds in using fireball spells to set the northern ship on fire. Adrahil, as usual, takes some hefty wounds, while Nodrog and Nidal do their part to fight off the attackers.

With the ship burning and sinking and beneath their feet, the last of northern attackers try to sell their lives dearly. In a few short minutes there is nothing remaining of the attackers except a few smoldering pieces of wreckage floating on the surface.

He boards the ship and introduces himself as Aldin an elf of the Realm of the Wilf Woods. He tells the party about orcs attacking the woods and destroying all goodness in the forest. The situation is desperate. Aldin lets the party know that they have a treasure item that could help the forest dwellers in their fight against the orcs - The Staff of the Woodlands.  Aldin asks the party to leave immediately and take the Staff of the Woodlands over the Fang  Mountains to the Wild Woods. Aldin is sure that once the staff is delivered to the Wild Woods the orcs will be defeated.  Aldin tells the best route to the woods is not along the river, but overland by way of Littleton and Stone Keep.  The party are reluctant to leave on this errand.
